Winter Warmth
4 cards · about a minute
Cold is relative
A mountain breed is comfortable where a short-coated Indie is shivering, so watch your own dog rather than the thermometer.
Coats are for some dogs
Thin coats, small bodies, seniors and puppies lose heat fast and genuinely need a layer; a double-coated dog in a jacket is being made uncomfortable, not warm.
Wash the paws
Salt, grit and antifreeze collect between the toes and all of it gets licked off, so rinse and dry the feet after every winter walk.
Watch the water
Dogs drink less when it is cold and dehydrate anyway on dry indoor air, so check the bowl more often than you would in summer, not less.
