The Balanced Bowl
5 cards · about a minute
Protein first
Protein rebuilds muscle, coat and the lining of the gut every day, so it is the part of the bowl to get right before you fuss over anything else.
Fat is not the enemy
Fat carries the vitamins that only dissolve in it and keeps skin supple, a dull, flaky coat is more often too little good fat than too much bathing.
Fuel, not filler
Carbohydrates are fuel rather than filler, and they belong in the bowl in proportion to how much your dog actually moved that day.
Colour on the plate
Vegetables and fruit are where most of the minerals and antioxidants come from, and variety across a week does more than any single celebrated ingredient.
Water is part of the meal
Dry food pulls water out of the body in order to digest it, so a full bowl beside every meal is not a courtesy. It is part of the recipe.
