Grooming by Coat

Short coats
A weekly rubber curry and a wipe-down is the entire routine, short-coated dogs shed constantly and need loosening rather than detangling.
Long coats
Brush daily down to the skin rather than over the top, because a long coat looks fine on the surface while it mats underneath, behind the ears first.
Never shave a double coat
The undercoat insulates against heat as well as cold and often grows back wrong, so rake it out thoroughly twice a year instead.
Non-shedding coats
A coat that does not shed still grows, so it mats instead, these are the dogs who need a professional groom every six to eight weeks whatever you do at home.
