Fasting for a Gut Reset

5 cards · about a minute

  1. Why a dog fasts

A dog in the wild does not eat every day, and a gut that is not busy digesting is free to repair its own lining. That is the whole of the argument.

  2. Who should not

Puppies, seniors, underweight or pregnant dogs, and any dog on medication or with a diagnosed condition should not be fasted; ask your vet before skipping a meal.

  3. One day, not more

For a healthy adult dog a single skipped day, one dinner to the next, is the entire intervention, and longer is not braver, only hungrier.

  4. Water stays

Water is never withheld, and a little plain bone broth across the day keeps a fasting dog comfortable without asking the gut to work.

  5. Come back small

Break the fast with a third of a normal meal, plain and warm, and build back over two days, a full bowl that first evening undoes the rest you just gave.
