Not a small human
A dog does not plan tomorrow or relitigate yesterday; almost everything they do is an answer to what is happening in the room right now.
Energy before words
Dogs read posture, breath and pace long before they read vocabulary, so your body has already said something by the time you open your mouth.
They want an answer
Most dogs are not trying to run the house. They are trying to find out whether anybody else is, and they will take the job if nobody claims it.
Calm is a skill
Calmness is not a temperament some dogs were issued with; it is learned, and it is learned from a household that practises it.
