The Art of Letting Go

4 cards · about a minute

  1. Their pace, not yours

Let an old dog choose the route and the length; the walk belongs to the nose now, and turning back early is not a failure.

  2. Count the good days

Keep a plain diary of good days and bad ones, eating, sleeping, moving, interest, because memory softens the picture and a written record does not.

  3. Quality over quantity

The question is not how long you can keep them but whether the days still hold what your dog enjoys, and that is a question to ask your vet out loud.

  4. Be in the room

Whatever you decide and whenever you decide it, stay: it is the last thing you can give, and nobody has ever regretted staying.
