Why it is paired
Curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own, which is exactly why the traditional paste combines turmeric with a fat and a little black pepper.
The paste
Simmer turmeric powder with water into a thick paste, stir in coconut or olive oil and a pinch of ground pepper, and keep it refrigerated for a fortnight.
Start very small
An eighth of a teaspoon for a small dog and up to half for a large one, once a day with food, and expect brilliantly yellow stool for a while.
Ask before you add it
Turmeric can thin blood and upset a sensitive stomach, so keep it away from surgery dates and anti-inflammatories and check with your vet first.
