Can Dogs Eat This?

5 cards · about a minute

  1. No safe dose

Xylitol, chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic and macadamia nuts are off the table at any quantity, a smaller amount is slower, not safer.

  2. Xylitol hides

It turns up in sugar-free gum, some peanut butters, mouthwash and baked goods, and it can drop a dog’s blood sugar within twenty minutes of being eaten.

  3. Fine in small amounts

Plain cooked chicken, carrot, cucumber, pumpkin, apple without the pips, curd and seedless watermelon all sit comfortably inside the daily treat allowance.

  4. The choking list

Cooked bones, corn cobs, avocado stones and the pits of stone fruit are blockage risks rather than poisons, and they account for more surgery than toxins do.

  5. If it is already eaten

Ring your vet or a poison line at once with the food, the amount and the time, do not wait for symptoms, and never try to make your dog sick at home.
