Bath Time, Done Right

4 cards · about a minute

  1. Less often than you think

Most dogs need a bath every four to eight weeks, and washing more strips the coat of its oil and causes the itch it was meant to fix.

  2. Lukewarm, always

Test the water on your inner wrist: a dog’s skin is thinner than yours, and water that feels pleasant to you is often too warm for them.

  3. Rinse twice as long

Shampoo left behind is the commonest cause of an itchy dog after a bath, so keep rinsing well past the point where the water runs clear.

  4. Dry all the way down

Damp roots under a thick coat turn sour within a day, towel hard, then use a dryer on cool until the skin itself is dry, not just the surface.
