Okay. So to understand canine mind, we should understand that there are three levels to it. As of now what pet parents are seeing, they are seeing their dog as a individual. Then they see as a breed and then they don't see the individual as a animal, right?
For example, koi bhi pet parent apne ghar mein pet lekar aata hai, usko as a family member treat kiya jaata hai. For example, uh, yeh humare hisaab se adjust hona chahiye. Yeh bahut ziddi hai, khaana nahi khaata. Yeh sabke upar lunge karta hai ki bahut hyper hai.
But today in this session, I will try to change that thinking. Woh saari cheezein kahan se generate ho rahi hai aur kahan se humko reflect kar rahi hai ek behavior mein. So before we understand the individual, we have to understand the animal and breed. So guys you know Earth is a home of estimated 7.7 animal species.
And let me ask you this question first. What are the basic needs of a human? This is just for laugh. Roti, kapda aur makaan.

Different species have different needs. They have different things how they explore their environment. For example, fish swim karte hain, birds fly karte hain, horses running karte hain and rabbits digging karte hain. So what does a dog, a animal naturally need? Walk. By walk they explore their environment.
So it's the basic movement what a dog needs that is walk. Now there are couple of more things, for example how we related it with humans. They need food, they need safety, they need shelter.
Accordingly, a dog as a species, they also need some more basic needs which are movement, social structure, exploration and predictability.
So these are key needs of a dog. Now we will deep dine-- deep down into what all these needs are. First is movement. Movement consists of walk, run, play and exercise. All these things will be clubbed under movement. Second comes exploration. Sniffing, gathering information. How humans gather information?
By reading books, Instagram, Facebook, phone calls. Similarly, dogs also sniff and gather the information. For example, abhi yahan thodi der pehle kaun yahan se gaya?
Kya woh lion tha? Kya woh snake tha? Agar koi dog gaya toh woh dominant tha. Uska testosterone level bahut badha hua tha. Kya mujhe usse threat ho sakta hai? And so on. So this is their basic need which is exploration. After that it comes safety and security. They want to feel protected and free from threats.
Predictability and routine. It consists of their schedules, rules and expectations. These are some more biological needs. I will not be covering this here, but we can go through it later part. Okay? Okay, now level two. We have understood what a animal need.
Now it's time what a breed is. So all dogs belongs to same species, but humans have bred them for their purpose and there are more than three-sixty actually, but just for a number I have kept three-sixty. Okay.
The first one is we will be taking here some of the examples and we will try to explain you how different breeds were bred and unke apne kya-kya traits hote hain. Okay. Uh, so, uh, let's start with Pomeranian. The, uh, the main reason was companionship.
Human requested, "Stay with me and be my companion." Unki natural tendency hoti hai woh people-oriented hain, alert hain, attention-seeking hain.

So we all, I think we all are ten, fifteen people, we have joined this and we all have different personalities. Some are outgoing, some are quiet, some are-- some prefer routine. Kuchh logon ko gussa jaldi aata hai. Kuchh log hanste bahut hain.
And even all the humans have basic needs, which I have explained, but all the personalities are different. And similarly, if we talk about two different dogs, toh hum kabhi bhi aisa nahi keh sakte ki main do Labradors se mila.
Main hamesha ek hi Labrador se milunga because animal, breed, and individual personality, that defines who they are.
For example, now I will be explaining this. Uh, we have two Labradors. On the left-hand side we can see one is playful, social, the other one is calm and reserved. But that does not mean unke jo breed ke specifics hain wo unmein nahi hai. Dono ko fetching pasand hai, right? Dono hi animal hain, dono hi dog hain.
Dono ki requirement hai movement, exploration, safety and so on. But un dono ki individual personality alag hai. Or with this personality, we try to, we try to schedule their day-to-day activities.
For example, agar mere paas ek Lab hai jo ki calm aur reserved hai, toh main koshish karunga usi same road pe roz walk karwaun because movement is a need of a animal.
Whereas agar mere paas ek confident Lab hai, toh main usko har roz ek nayi street pe lekar jaana pasand karunga because use challenges pasand aayenge.

Yeah, thank you Sunny. Uh, yeah it's every animal lover's dream to have a dog to cuddle, to play with.
But the reality of owning one dog, I feel is far from it as it comes with a lot of responsibility and commitment for a very, very long time, which none of us actually anticipate, you know, before, you know, thinking of getting one. So the average lifespan of a dog is anywhere from 10 to 15 years at least.
So one needs to be prepared for many things. Hence an extensive research for the same is essential and in my mind it's non-negotiable. So to avoid problems in future which lead-which can lead to a dog being unhappy or the family being unhappy or the dog has to be rehomed or abandoned or put in the shelter.
So I think it makes a lot of sense to do your research properly before practically, you know, taking a step to add the living being in your family. So the first thing, the main point which I want everyone to actually think of is the reason why they want a dog in their life. Is it for companionship? Is it for security?
Is it just to kill your boredom? Or you want a com-company to stay fit and have a routine for yourself in which he might help you with?
So that's one of the reason that you really should be very clear why you are getting the dog. It's not just you are getting a toy for your child ki oh tum khush ho jaoge and usko la ke de diya. It's not at all like that.
So the second very, very big reason is big point to be considered is are your financial expenditures. So when you get a dog, it has a lot, you know, to be put in, not just physically, mentally, emotionally, but a lot of finances are involved.
Jaise ab aapko aap breeder se lete ho toh sab khareedne ki hi baat tak khatam nahi ho jaata. So you when you get buy a dog, which ideally you should get it from an ethical breeder or a shelter. So you have to think ki you will be spending good amount of money for a nutritious meal every day, which you will be giving.
Then you have to take the dog for vaccinations. You have to go for vet visits. You have to groom him depending on the breed. Some breeds need even more frequent grooming than others. And then medical emergencies also ho sakti hain.
And if you are not there, then you might need to take help of boarding, which again costs a lot. So everything comes at a cost that you need to be prepared not just for the beginning time, but for a long time to come like 10 to 15 years. You need to be prepared for those finances in mind.
So the other next point I feel is you need to also decide what kind of breed do you want? Do you want a pedigree dog or you want a rescue you want to adopt from a shelter? So there are different, uh, you know, uh, that different reasons and the pros and cons to both.
So, uh, you need to know you have a very big house, you have a yard. So maybe you can afford to have a large dog. You know, you can cater to his physical needs or activity levels in that. But if you have a small flat, so maybe a smaller dog might be okay, you know, to adjust with.
But in case you plan to have a bigger dog, a large breed dog in a small flat, then you have to put in extra effort to give him exercise, to keep him mentally stimulated and to keep him satisfied. So these are also the things which you need to keep in mind.
Then you need to see what daily time commitment you can give to the dog once he is here. So you-he-he is not like a mannequin that you just put it like a toy on a sofa and just go wherever you want to go.
So there will be a he will need your time for walks for in fact, when you bring a puppy, you will need time for his training.
You will have to train him to pee or poop. You will have to train him to be in a crate or a place where you want him to be when he is settled and when you are working. And then, uh, you need to take him for walks. You need to play with him. Then you need to mentally stimulate him.
And then, of course, time is needed to for the vet visits also regularly.
So, uh, this being a very, very important point regarding the time commitment part, because most people start, you know, they start owning a dog on their own, but then gradually they, you know, uh, keep giving the responsibilities to the domestic helpers and all. So that confuses the dog with the bonding also.
So then another very important point is when you are getting a dog, it's very important to have the whole family on one page.
You need the family members acceptance that everyone wants a dog and everyone wants to pitch in the responsibilities in bringing him up. So whether it is toilet training, whether it's playing, whether incorporating rules, boundaries, discipline, it's very important that, uh, all the family members are on the same page.
Then main thing, if you are adopting a dog, a dog, an adult dog Then the pros are yes, the dog already might be pee or poop trained and he might, uh, you know, you don't-- might not need the initial, uh, things, uh, like socializing and so on, which, uh, he's already gone through that phase.
So when you are getting an, uh, adopt-- you're adopting an adult dog, so and especially if he's from a shelter or a rescue dog, he's a rescue dog.
So there are many questions which you need to ask and you need to keep, uh, discuss with the people from where you get. So where if you have kids or elders at home, so is the dog, uh, kid-friendly? Is he all right with elders? And then what are his activity levels? Is he a very high energy dog or a very laid back one?
So this you also have to do in any case for any puppy or any breed or any, uh, adopted adult dog also. You need to match his energy levels with yours. If you are an highly energetic person who's into marathons and running, or if you are a sedentary person, you need to have, uh, the dog accordingly.
You need to have a dog whose energy levels are as active as yours.
Then they'll thrive and you will also be happy with the companionship or with his company, his presence being around. So then you also need to check if in case you are getting, uh, a dog from a shelter or a rescue dog, that if he has medical issues, what is his age, what is his mainly, what is his temperament like?
And whether he's neutered or unneutered or spayed, and whether he has-- he's housebreaking in the sense does he need-- does he have a place to pee or poop or is he supposed to be taken out to relieve himself? So, uh, and of course then why was the dog put for adoption? That is a very, very big question.
So you need to be clear about all these, uh, questions and many more depending on your own family scenario.
So, uh, before I think when we, uh, get a car or a house, we do so much of research, so why not do that kind of a research even getting a almost like a family member in our house for good 10, 15 years. So I think in India we don't have that kind of a, an environment. You know, the climate of India matters so much.
There's so much of heat and there is so much of some-sometimes cold places. Some are very humid. So, uh, I think Indies, for example, thrive very well in our climate. They have good immunity.
So, uh, you need to also see which dog, like, uh, a giant, a Saint Bernard or a, uh, you know, Huskies, they don't do well in so much of heat. They have to be in A-ACs all the time. So you need to keep these things also in mind when you are getting a dog.
So what kind of, uh, you know, climate he can thrive in and be happy so it will not pose problems for you as well. I'm reminded of majorly these were the points, but I'm maj-- uh, reminded of a kind of a funny, uh, story or a, you know, practical kind of a tip.
Someone told me that before getting a dog, you know, you should practice with a, uh, a person who was told to take care of a berry, a cherry. Ke aap ne agar pet laana hai toh pehle aap is fruit ka khayaal rakho. Toh jaise-jaise aap se galti hoti jaayegi toh ye fruit phir aapko next fruit bada banega, milega.
Toh wo cherry usne kahin rakh ke bhool gaya. Wo cherry u-kha li. Phir kisi ne wahan par usko, usko cheeku mila. Toh usne cheeku ko kahin rakha. Phir usko wo bhi kisi ne khaa liya ya koi chooha khaa gaya. Phir uske baad usko apple mila and subsequently after a week or 10 days, he was left with a watermelon.
