On urgency, this record says: “Nothing about it is time-critical, which is exactly why it goes unaddressed for years while worsening everything else on this shelf.

Written by Sunny Luthra and sourced from the veterinary literature. Not yet reviewed by a practising veterinarian. It is guidance for recognising and deciding, not a substitute for examining your dog.

This is the most treatable condition in this collection, and the least treated, largely because nobody wants to be the person who says it.

Approximately 59% of dogs in the United States are classified as overweight or obese by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, and a survey of UK show dogs, dogs whose owners are, by definition, paying attention, found 65% overweight and 9% obese.

And the perception gap is the real problem: most owners of overweight dogs describe them as normal weight. Not out of denial exactly. Out of calibration. When most dogs you see are heavy, heavy starts looking normal.

Score your dog honestly

The 1-to-9 body condition score is the most extensively validated scale and the one recommended by the WSAVA Global Nutrition Panel:

ScoreCategoryBody fat
1-3Underweight,
4-5Ideal~15-24%
6-7Overweight~25-34%
8-9Obese≥35%

Dogs at 8 or 9 carry at least 30% excess weight.

Three checks, thirty seconds:

  1. Ribs. Fingers flat along the ribcage. At an ideal score you feel them easily under a thin covering, without pressing. If you have to press to find them, your dog is overweight
  2. From above. A visible waist behind the ribcage. A straight line or outward bulge means overweight
  3. From the side. The abdomen should tuck upward toward the hind legs

Do it now, on your own dog. It takes less time than reading the next section.

Why it matters more than it looks

Arthritis, by two separate mechanisms. Extra load through the joints at every step, and, less obviously, fat tissue is metabolically active and produces inflammatory signalling molecules that worsen joint disease independently of the weight itself. Weight loss in overweight arthritic dogs contributes significantly to pain relief, which makes it the most effective arthritis treatment available.

Diabetes risk.

Heart and airway strain, badly compounded in flat-faced breeds.

Anaesthetic and surgical risk, which is worth thinking about before your dog needs an unrelated procedure.

Heat intolerance. In Indian summers this is not a minor point, an overweight dog is at substantially higher risk of heat stroke.

Quality of life. The part owners notice most after the fact: dogs that lose weight play more, walk further, get up more easily, and behave younger. Owners routinely describe getting a different dog back.

Doing it properly

Step 1: rule out the medical causes. A dog that gains weight on a reasonable diet, or cannot lose it on a restricted one, may have hypothyroidism or Cushing's. Dieting a dog with an untreated endocrine disease does not work and misses the diagnosis.

Step 2: set a target weight with your vet, and calculate intake from it:

RER = 70 × (target weight in kg)0.75

Feeding at roughly RER for the target weight is a common starting point.

Step 3: count everything. This is where nearly every attempt fails.

  • Weigh the food with kitchen scales. A measuring cup varies more than you would believe between fillings
  • Treats count, and should be no more than 10% of daily calories, taken out of the total, not added on top
  • Chews count. Some dental chews carry a substantial number of calories
  • Table scraps count
  • The person who feeds the dog when you are out counts

Step 4: agree it with the household, out loud. The single most common reason a weight plan fails is a second person feeding a second dinner out of sympathy. This needs saying directly, once, to everyone.

Step 5: weigh monthly and write it down. Aim for 1-2% of body weight per week. Faster costs muscle.

Step 6: exercise, but do not rely on it. Movement helps and it maintains muscle. Weight loss is driven by intake. A dog cannot outwalk a bowl.

Practical things that make it easier

Use the food as the entertainment. Scatter feeding, snuffle mats and puzzle feeders make the same ration last far longer and provide mental work that tires a dog more than distance does.

Swap treats for the dog's own kibble, counted out of the daily ration.

Vegetables as bulk, cooked pumpkin, carrot, bottle gourd. Filling, low calorie, and they let you serve a bowl that looks like a meal.

Split into more meals, same total, so the dog is not hungry for one long stretch.

Expect the begging to increase for a fortnight, then settle. That phase is where most plans collapse, and knowing it is temporary helps.

The bottom line

Put your hands on your dog's ribs right now. If you have to press to find them, this article is about your dog.

It is the most reversible thing in this collection, it costs nothing but discipline, and the benefit shows up across arthritis, heat tolerance, surgical safety and the number of good years.

Rule out the thyroid first, calculate from a target weight, count absolutely everything including what other people give, and go slowly.

And when the vet raises it, they are not criticising you. They are raising the one thing on the list that you can fix without a prescription.

The formula, the multipliers and the full body condition method are in how much to feed a dog.

Near this one

  1. Heat strokeThe emergency most likely to happen to an ordinary Indian dog on an ordinary day. Start cooling before you get in the car, and not with ice.
  2. PoisoningWhat, how much, when, the three facts everything depends on. Why inducing vomiting is often the wrong move, and the household poisons specific to Indian homes.
  3. Snake biteKeep them still and drive. No tourniquet, no cutting, no sucking, no ice, and find out today which clinic near you actually stocks antivenom.
