Case B-07

The older one growls on her sister whenever she likes for no reason..

The question, as it arrived
The older one growls on her sister whenever she likes for no reason..

Kept word for word, including the spelling. It is what a dog parent typed at the point of running out of ideas, and that is worth more than a tidy version of it.

Older dog growling at the younger dog in the house for no apparent reason? Unearned attention creates this, and a structured walk together is the first fix.

i have two indie stray female sisters.
they were around 9 months old when i brought them home.
the younger one had gastroenteritis when she came home.
she was aside for 4-5 days with her treatment.
the elder was/is very much bossy, wants the whole attention to herself only.
earlier they used to be together sitting, playing or sleeping.
but now the younger one is scared of the older one.
the older one growls on her sister when ever she likes for no reason.
what can be done?
please help.

Whenever people say that their dog needs the whole attention to herself then that means you are giving a lot of unearned affection to her, which is making her habitual of demanding attention.

The question is, you are giving affection because she is demanding it or she is demanding because you are giving unearned affections since puppyhood?

A dog should work for a reward, that's their nature otherwise they lose humbleness, it happens with us humans as well.

You need to take your dogs on a long structured walk together, it gives them a sense of team works, they will start working as a team and the need for competition will fade away.

Questions this record answers

My two dogs were best friends for months and now suddenly the older one growls constantly. What changed?

Social maturity is the most common trigger. At 18 months to 3 years, dogs reach social maturity and their relationship dynamics often shift. A dog that was a submissive playmate as a puppy may now be testing the hierarchy. Separately, any change in the human's attention pattern, a new baby, a change in work schedule, illness, can trigger demand behavior in dogs who have learned to expect constant attention.

Should I intervene when one dog growls at the other?

Intervene only if it escalates to snapping with contact or a full fight. Growling between dogs is normal communication. It is the dog saying 'I need space' or 'that is mine.' Interrupting every growl teaches the dog to skip the warning and go straight to escalation. What you should intervene on is any behavior that rewards the growl, the other dog giving up space, toys, or your attention because of it.

The younger dog is now scared of the older dog. How do I help rebuild their relationship?

Do not force interaction between them. The relationship rebuilds most naturally through parallel activity, structured walks side by side, feeding at the same time in separate spots, calm play sessions that you initiate and end. The structured walk is especially powerful for multi-dog households: it positions the dogs as teammates under your leadership rather than competitors for your attention.

Should I rehome one dog if the aggression does not stop?

Rehoming is a last resort, not a first response. Most inter-dog aggression in households is resolved by addressing the human behavior that created the imbalance, primarily, unearned attention and absence of structured leadership. Give the structured walk, calm feeding rituals, and consistent leadership approach at least 6 to 8 weeks of genuine implementation before concluding that the dogs cannot coexist.

Is it normal for female dogs to be more aggressive toward each other than male dogs?

Same-sex female aggression is documented and can be more intense than male-to-male aggression in some cases, particularly in breeds with strong guarding instincts. However, the most important factor is not sex but social structure. Two females with a clear, established hierarchy and a human who provides consistent leadership rarely fight. The conflict arises when the hierarchy is ambiguous or when humans inadvertently fuel competition through unequal attention.

Ask about your own dog

A case is general. Your dog is not.

Before you try anything here

Some of this belongs in a room, not on a page

A bite that broke skin, a dog guarding food or a place from the people who live there, or any of this in a home with a small child, those want a behaviourist present. All three are workable. None of them are workable from here.
